Basic House PhotoThe intention of this blog is to keep a record of the house building process. It might be of use for my therapist in the years to come when I am trying to get over the trauma of building. Did you know that a porta potty is part of the whole contract? Geesh.

We bought land in Leicester (pronounced Lester) at the end of Dix Creek 2…and I mean at the end. We are so far out that there is no internet. Oddly we are not that far out; we are just in a less inhabited area.
Anyway, this is actually the house we think we are building, without the front porch, back dormer, or back deck. It will be white pine and we think it will fit into our woodsy land amazingly. I have more photos, land included, to add. I will.

I was a bit disheartened tonight. We met with the possible contractor who told that if all went perfectly, we would not be in until August. I had figured the beginning of July!! He said the permits alone would take three weeks. I say the county employees should be drinking more coffee.

More pictures tomorrow, now that I know how to do it. I also guess I better invite you all to look at this site, or I will be talking to myself for the next few months.

Note:  The simple math you have to do to leave a comment is to block spam.  So I am told.

  1. While I haven’t built a house, I’ve done my share of rennovation and everything takes longer than expected and much longer than any contractor will tell you-but, in the end it is all worth it.

I look forward to following your progress and my only advice is to enjoy every step and stay very, very involved. Do not assume that anyone you talk with understands a word you are saying. Make them show you exactly what they mean and don’t be afraid to ask questions until you are sure you are all on the same page.

Oh, my other piece of advice, is ignore everyone’s advice.

  2. Hey!!
What a great idea!! I’ll get to read about you going crazy while you get the thing finished! No way could I build a house….I have a hard enough time dealing with the people who just come to make repairs! Can’t wait to see the finished product, tho….I was thinking about making a visit to you this summer, but I may wait til the house is done so I can be the inaugural guest!

  3. A blog on the house building! what a great idea! I will be sure to check back frequently for updates.
I love the high triangular windows in the side of the house - looking forward to the pictures!

  4. I am looking forward to reading all about your house adventures. Just one question: Are you going to survive without internet or are you going to bribe someone to get it for you? :-) (I would be bribing heavy sums now! I love my internet!)

  5. WOW!! I wish you the best of luck with the house building process and am eagerly anticipating reading and joining you on your journey.

  6. I cannot wait to see the photos. I told Lexi once it is built, we will take Journey #2 to NC with baby Leah!

    Good luck! TA

  7. Well, the internet is an interesting story. The only thing we can find is satellite. It is a bit expensive but I think I might be able to give up coffee easier than the internet. Eventually there will be a big development on the top of the mountain. When that happens we will get cable and dsl…and garbage pick up!!!

I am excite, but know it will be frustrating. That is one of the reasons for the blog. That and I have been paying to host this thing for years and never used it.

Everyone is welcome to visit when we move in. If it takes longer than the middle of August we might be living on the land in tents. Kathie

  8. I love math! That makes me happy!

You guys are going to have a lot of fun building - even if it’s August, it’ll all be worth it. And just think, you have me and Lin to vent to when things go wonky (’cuz things always go wonky).

    WE love you guys!

  9. Great idea Kathie! I love the look of the land and I believe you guys have some good ideas so far. If there is anything that Becky and I can do..you know we’re here to help in any way we can! Love to you both!

  10. Having been out to the land with Kathie and Ann, I can say it is lovely out there. The piece is private but not isolated.
The only downside is Kathie will need to make friends with people on the roads leading to there home so she can continue to mow!

  11. Not having a lawn to mow is one of the downsides of this property. Ann promises there will be a front lawn, in time. I am now thinking I will use my riding mower as transportation down the mountain to the mail…or I could actually consider walking to the mailbox for exercise!

  12. Good luck to you guys. It is a big venture you are undertaking, but it sounds like it is going to be fabulous. Look forward to traveling with TA, Lexi and Leah to see you guys. Luv ya, Nikki

  13. It’s so good to know things are moving along. I love having you so close by, but will happily drive to 39 Dandelion for a visit! Love the blog idea - much easier for you than keeping all of us informed with individual e-mails.
