What a decision: how big should the deck be? We gave up our covered front porch the width of the house. Who knew that dream would be more expensive than a thumb transplant? ( I actually met someone who had a thumb transplant, and I have never forgotten it.) So we will go with a 10×6 uncovered front porch, with the idea of getting an awning or saving for the actual porch.
We have always thought we would use the deck more, so we are concentrating on that. Our deck/cabinet man met us out there today and will call tomorrow with an estimate. Right now it is 12×24, with a small deck to be made around the hot tub, when we get one. That would not be part of the initial size, but the hot tub would be on the ground, next to what is the deck now.
I know what you are thinking, and I can hear my mother’s voice in my ear. “A hot tub? You cut the porch for a hot tub?” Hell, we might have cut the stove and refrigerator for the hot tub. Someone told me that the two best times of a hot tub owner are the first day you have it and the day you sell it. I just think I would use it all the time, especially when it snowed.
If it makes you all feel better, we are going to be looking for a used one. So there!
Ira came out to the land today and posed as if he were ripping up this silly green fencing. In truth he did tell us he was going to charge is electric screw driver, and will be ready when the house is standing.
Ann took a picture of one of the squirrels chattering up our front yard. Notice what he is eating…a graham cracker. I have been buying unsalted, raw peanuts for these guys and look at how happy he is with a bit of graham cracker. I have no idea where he got it, and he was not telling either.
Well, we will let you know what we have to sell for the decking tomorrow.

Sell whatever it takes for the deck!! We absolutely live out on our screened-in deck from April to October - and now we are trying to figure out how much it would be to add some deck for….a hot tub!
We realized that the hot tub should always have been the first priority so you can relax in it when you have finished working on your new house!
Go for it!
