We are having real problems with Brando, the nine month old, sixty pound dog. From the beginning, he has wanted to be alpha dog. His struggle to become this is now taking on aggressive traits. He is a sweet dog. The cats come to him to be chewed on. He has his puppy problems, but we are beginning school tomorrow. That will take care of a lot of things, but I do not know if it will take care of his aggression/alpha need.
Now, first of all, he is not aggressive to us. He is stubborn and feigns deafness when told to stop doing something, but he is aggressive to the other dogs. Many times a dog biscuit will cause a fight complete with wrestling and bared teeth. No blood yet, but lots of noise. Last night I put down a new dog food that we were given as a free sample at the pet store. Brando liked it so well, that he decided not to let the other dogs into the laundry room, where there food is. He laid in the door, and he flew to any dog that dared walk near the area. He growled in the direction of the other dogs for an hour. When Xena tried to get up the stairs, which is next to the door to the laundry room, Brando jumped her. With that I took the new food out of the bowl and put the old food in (we feed dry food). That settled him down, but not completely. This morning all is well, but the new food is not going down again.
Does anyone know if this alpha business can be trained out of him? I don’t care if he is the boss, but I do not want the other dogs to feel fearful because of him.

School should be great for him. I think what you will need to do is to let him know that You are the alpha and not him. You should be the leader of the whole pack with all the dogs following your lead. I know it can be changed, I just don’t know how. Hopefully they can help you with that at school. Where are you taking him?

I am just taking him to PetSmart for these little classes. I found a place in town called A Good Dog’s Life. They will come out to the house, which I think might be better. I need them to see him with the other dogs.
