I know chickens have been laying eggs for thousands of year, but our chickens are just so clever. They are laying them in colors and, for the most part, in the nesting boxes I made. Well, of couple have been left on the floor, one on the tool cabinet, and one on a pile of poop, but they are mostly in the boxes. What clever chickens we have! They had a reward meal on Christmas of apples, tomatoes, and lettuce. Did I tell you how very clever they are?!! They lay eggs!! Pretty ones too!

I probably bothered them constantly, but I wanted to get birth photos!

These were the two I got this morning before I left. Aren’t they beautiful?

Aw, the dogs are not at all thrilled with the eggs. They are only happy the couch will hold three of them.

Ok now get ready to smile. Little Cecil the rooster has taken his place as man of the coop. He crows constantly. I have a few clips of him. He is so much smaller than most of the hens, well actually smaller than all of them except the silkie. He doesn’t care. He thinks he is a big guy.

  1. So . . . how long until you get annoyed with Cecil’s constant crowing? It’s endearing now . . . but for how long?!

  2. Oh, I love his little crow!! It’s so cute! What a little ‘dude’! And the eggs are beautiful!!!

  3. To celebrate the newly laid eggs, make a nice custard or lemon curd. Yummy!!

  4. you know,,,he’s little and cute…has lots of attitude…the crow is adorable…however, i have neighbors who have a rooster-yes, in the city (apparently some demographic groups think chickens belong anywhere they are), and i can tell you from months of early morning wake ups that it can get downright annoying.

and i dunno if you noticed, but those eggs look kind of, well, green.

now, i have to tell you what i am really waiting for is the video of little Cecil chasing some of those whomping huge hens around for a bit of afternoon delight. My grandfather always had chickens, but i honestly can’t say i have ever seen chickens erm, you know. I don’t necessarily know that i want to, however, i CAN picture you out with a camera trying to get it on film.

  5. I am only at the house two nights a week, so I do not get tired of hearing that squeaky little crow. Luckily there are no neighbors to get bothered. He is lucky he is in a place to just crow his little comb off.

pam, I have seen him jump on the back of a Rhode Island Red. The Red just kept walking like nothing had happened, and he slid off. I really do not think he will see much action. haha and the eggs from the Araucana are suppose to be green.

  6. I LOOOOOOOVE the crow and the eggs are BEAUTIFUL!!!
