We told Cecil the rooster that new hens were coming. His reply was:
Translation: “Oh Boy! New women for my harem!”
One of the Gidgets (we got these when they were two days old) said, ” More???? I don’t get enough attention from Cecil as it is!”
Meet Goldie and the two Black Beans, Lil’ Bean and Big Bean.
I caught the first meeting of one of the Beans (can only tell the Beans apart when they are together) and Cecil:
Translation: “Hey Big Boy! Hey Pretty Lady!”
Goldie got her name because of the ring around her neck. She is already laying, but the others are too young.
It seemed to be all good until Lil’ Bean got out of the chicken area and was investigating the backyard.
“Chicken? Do I smell chicken,” thought Max, who until this moment had shown no interest in the flock.
So, before we could get Max into the house, he ran and grabbed Lil’ Bean. We got him to drop her, and she ran off under the propane tank. When we went to get her, she snuck between the fence and the shed, and hide out in a lot of brush and lumber. We could not find her, and we did not know if she was injured. (This has a good ending….later)
So I went on to my job of building Silkie nesting boxes. They are not suppose to be able to fly as high as the larger chickens, so we had to build something for them a bit lower to the ground. I built it, and it took two of us to carry it into the chicken house. The big chickens took to it right away.
They got a new flock block, and they were all happy….except for Goldie and Big Bean, who know they were missing Lil’ Bean.
Late in the afternoon, Carrie saw Lil’ Bean part way up the mountain behind the house. When Carrie moved toward her, she ran further up. So Carrrie let her be for a while. Then she went and sat behind the fence, on the same side Lil’ Bean was running. Goldie and Big Bean were carrying on, so Lil’ Bean came closer and called to them. She came closer and when Carrie tried to grab her, she ran under some lumber. Carrie lifted the lumber and there she was….Carrie grabbed her. She was not injured from the dog incident, but was certainly frightened. She was warmly greeted, as warmly as chickens greet, and all went into the coop for the night. This morning when Carrie let them out, Lil’ Bean would not come out. I guess she is still recovering, and as soon as we can find a Chicken Whisperer, we will make an appointment. Never a dull moment at Possum Manor West.

Congratulations on the new little ladies! They are very cute (and I love Goldie’s necklace). Glad everyone is unharmed and getting along well.

i’m thinking you should get a pulletzer prize for today’s blog. (there’s a pun in there somewhere). They’re just as cute as a chicken could be…although i admit to still having nightmares about that fat old hen sitting on my poodle. Are there plans for even more exotic chickens in the future…or are you holding out for an entirely new species next? I mean goat’s milk is very good, and i bet a goat or two would keep Brando in his place.

Goats would be great, but first there is a coyote problem in the area, and the goats are disappearing. I know I cannot convince anyone to bring them in the house at night. Also, there is not a lot of room for them, the garden is going to take up a whole lot of the yard this year. Brando would be afraid of them; he is afraid of anything he cannot bully.
Pullitzer Prize…..pretty darn clever.
We hope to find Silver Lace Polish Hens, but have been unable to so far. They are amazing.
Oh, the Silkies make wonderful mothers, so we might let them raise a chick or two, if they decide they want to. No pressure.

if goats are vanishing in the area you might want to check and see if some of my cousins have moved into your area. I distinctly remember a barbeque they invited us to…they were allegedly grilling a poached deer…(poached as in shot illegally out of season)…however, it tasted funny…and a few days later we heard the neighbors were missing a goat…
so check for my cousins before you totally rule out goats…
