It is still raining here, and raining hard. I am sick of it. The poor chickens are living in mud. I gave them some fresh straw today, in hopes of keeping them somewhat dry. I changed the straw in their house too. At least it is not cold.
Poor soaking wet Butter Bean. I have noticed that her black head is really a very dark and shiny blue. I am thinking of entering her in the pageants.
This is Roxanne, my seventeen year old cat. She lives in the kitchen, so she can be near her greatest obsession….food. Once in a while she actually goes outside. The other day, in a moment of non-rain, she met the chickens. She weighs three or four pounds, and I think even Butter Bean would win in a fight with her.
Soup of the week: Tuscan White Bean and Tomato
2 TBS olive oil
1 C chopped onion ( heck no, maybe I used a half)
1 leek, white and light green parts only, chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1/4 tsp rosemary
1/4 tsp thyme
1 bay leaf
1 can (14 oz) whole tomatoes, chopped, with juice ((I used a bigger can)
2 Cups dried White Beans, presoaked
6 C chciken broth ( I used a bit more because the container had more)
1 1/2 tsp salt ( I did not think it needed it, so I did not add it)
Pepper to taste
Parmesan cheese for topping
Put olive oil in pot and heat. Then add the onion, leek and garlic. Saute until tender, about five minutes. Add the herbs, beans, tomatoes, and broth. Bring to a boil and then simmer for an hour. After an hour, remove the bay leaf and simmer a half hour longer. At this point add the salt and pepper, if needed. Ladle into bowls and top with Parmesan cheese.

the soup sounds great. I may actually try this one!
oh, and just a side note here…i bought a lottery ticket last night…
and guess what?
yeah, promising to buy you a horse or a harley when i win did not improve my luck one damn bit.
here’s my worry. Last week you were talking about taking all this stuff in jars to the fair. Today you’re talking about taking Butter Bean to the fair…
okay…no Butter Bean in jars. Ribbons are cool though
I don’t think there is an event in which I could enter canned Butter Bean….and I certainly never would. We promised them they would never be food. However, the pageant is a grand idea, ya know. Little chickens dressed in frilly dresses.
As for the lottery. We actually got two numbers the other day. That pays nothing, but it is two more numbers than we ever have.
I bet Butter Bean would take first place in a pageant, especially dressed in a frilly dress. lol
Will that be Butter Bean’s Halloween costume? Blue frilly dress to match her head? Or maybe all the chickens should dress like seals since with their feathers slicked back, they all look like water creatures?
i put my little dogs in dresses sometimes. and yeah, Kathie, one of them even has a little sunbonnet. She really prefers her little hoodies, though. Still, it’s hard to imagine dressing up a chicken.
(for those of you who don’t know me, let me assure you Kathie just spewed whatever she was drinking on her monitor at the idea of ME dressing up a little dog in a sunbonnet)
I just posted a comment, and it disappeared. So if it shows up a double, ignore it.
What I said was that I did spit my coffee all over the screen this morning. The idea of Pam dressing a dog in girl clothes just makes me giggle. Pam is a Rottweiler type of girl in my mind, but she fosters poodles. I envision her walking around with a poodle in each pocket! That makes me smile.
As for the soup….it was probably the easiest I have made, and it might be the best. We had it for dinner with corn bread, and Ann said it was real comfort food. It would be easy to make on the spur of the moment except I do not usually have a leek on hand. Other than that, I would have the ingredients.
By the way, Asheville got between 3 and 5 inches of rain yesterday, and it is still pouring.
Roxanne looks like you have her in jail. She reminds me of my black cat when we were growing up – Blackie. He never left the house.
Now for the chickens. You had a rain coat and boots on. Why not get them rain coats and boots too. That why they can go outside and play in the rain like you did. lol
Does their house have heat to help them dry off? Maybe you should invest in something like that to keep them warm when they get wet.
I have a few soup recipes, but keep forgetting to put them on the computer and send them to you. Some are ones that my Grandma use to make.
i am SO not a rottweiler person. My favorite dog ever was a west highland terrier. the two tiny poodles (5 and 7 pounds) have their own “outward hound” over the shoulder messenger bags to ride in…and we’re working on teaching the labradoodle to carry them in a doggie backpack.
I all but spit my nicorette gum onto the screen. Pam, stop dressing the dogs up in clothes. Get a doll… Never, would I ever imagined you doing that. Yes, I stopped smoking, 6 plus months ago. Came down with that stomach virus that was going around, got dehydrated, was so sick I could not smoke without thinking I would pass out. That was the day I quit. Dang, come to think about it all, I have quit pretty much everything. No drinking, no, well u know
…
I have a female Maltese, I do not allow the groomer to make her look girlie with ribbons and bows. I fired one groomer for not doing the puppy cut I asked her to do.
Kathie, there is this thing that goes on in Asheville, I forgot what its called. But the event happens on this huge piece of land, music, dancing, food, drinks, different entertainment, vendors that sell somethings. Its a yearly happening there. Maybe in Sept? Can’t remember. In the very front is a playground for children, with slides and that sort of thing. I believe its close to the Farmers Market, can’t swear on it. Maybe you can enter your hen there, or chicken, which ever it is… I know nothing about farm animals. I may have a long southern draw, but not farm animal savvy. Oh and maybe the bean thing you could enter…
I love the way you take care of those chickens, all your animals. That one dog is absoultely beautiful!
I know, not to show up there on a Sunday… There is only so much soup I can take in, or will even try. Now I can cook the hell outta some boy scout soup.
