Garbonzo aka Bean Sprout ..or just Sprout

We have a baby!!!!  I thought the earliest the chick might arrive was today, but I went out this morning to give them fresh water and food, and I heard a “peep peep peep.” There it was…running around the chicken yard.

I looked in the chicken house, and this is what I saw:

Sprout is a little camera shy.

Sprout spends a lot time under his mama, keeping warm and safe. I have no idea if Sprout is a male of female. Half the time I call it a him, the other half I call it a her.  I am hoping it is a her, because two roosters are often a problem.

Brando has not quite decided what he will be for Halloween.

    congratulations! you’re grandmothers.

i didn’t think it would happen, but i am really happy to see little sprout emerge…and what a little cutie, too…

  2. Gena says:

    how adorable is that! beautiful…
its almost offical, you could be a farmer!

I did not believe it would hatch either; I hoped it would though. Such a cold time to hatch a baby, though. It is so cute to watch it run around and then scamper under the mother. It is cute, and I hope it is healthy. I do not know a lot about raising chickens, but I must be doing it right if they had a baby.

It is 38 degrees this morning. I am happy. I bought the material for the two large sides of the coop and will put them together together today. Then I will go for the materials for the other side. I had a neighbor look over my plans, because I knew I would miss something essential. I did. I did not have top support beams, which meant my roof would be nine feet without any support. My roof is a 4×6 sheet of siding. So now it will be supported. Simple fix, but awful if I had not done it. It is great that the few neighbors we have a great. Thanks Steve!!

  4. Gena says:

I do believe, at some point, you would have noticed, before the roof collapsed, (hopefully) something was just a tad off, support beams missing hahahahahaha….
I take it those chickens are not the kind of chickens ppl eat… I only remember white ones, that we ate growing up from my dad’s chicken coop.
I mean those are some beautiful chickens.

  5. pam says:

i consulted the original plan…there are support beams in the roof.

I woke up this morning and took dogs outside. It is 54 degrees and there is a breeze coming off the ocean. A very brisk breeze. In short it’s damn cold. Just thought i would mention that.

so i’ve been thinking about this chicken thing, and i am a little concerned. I mean, suppose Sprout is a female and remains at Possum Manor…we’re setting up a potentially incestuous situation there…and no matter what Sprout is, will he/she/it not ultimately be traumatized by watching his/her/it’s parents repeatedly, well, you know…i mean chickens aren’t very discrete…

    is Ann awake yet?

  6. Gena says:

Pam I am sipping my 2nd cup of coffee. I pulled up the manor stuff again, read your post, and all but spit my coffee out! Uh, so funny…
I think it was the “in short its damn cold”, is what got me. So I take it, u are close enough to the ocean to see it, or at least feel it?
Yes, lets make Kathie’s page about us, not about Possum Manor. I think in the old irc days, it was called “taking over a channel”, hahaha in real.
Support beams or not, I have no clue about building things. So I am certain I would have missed a very important part of the plan.
I am curious about these chickens. I have never seen a chicken this color. I had no clue they came in anything but white. And all were edible.
And I thought for sure peeps were hatched in pastels. You mean they are not hatched as green, pink, blue, or yellow? Or is black the new pastel….

Baby Sprout is beautiful. Glad mother, baby and grandmas are doing fine. What kind of gift do you make/send for a baby chick? An afghan, booties, sweater, a hat?

  8. Becky says:

The baby is so cute!!! Congratulations Grandmas!!! LOL

  9. Gena says:

    jan, send a crock pot ;) , a small one….

  10. admin says:

I am going to have you all arrested!! hahah These are not eating chickens. Go Google “Silkie chickens” Gena, you will see them. They are to skinny to eat.

Jan, as for gifts….they prefer any gifts be for me…they are so selfless.

Ok…..Here is an Ann update. Just this morning Ann bothered to read the prescription label on the xanax the doctor gave her. He gave her two xanax, each 2M…not one like we thought they were. It said, “Take ONE before procedure.” She took both, so she took 4 M….the last time she took 1.5 and was loopy. This is more than three times that. No wonder she was out almost 24 hours and remembers nothing!!!!! She doesn’t remember demanding Shooney’s breakfast bar (there was no way I was going in a restaurant with her), she does not remember falling up the stairs, she does not remember demanding chocolate chip pancakes and then wearing them, and she does not remember the procedure at all.

  11. Gena says:

Omg, no wonder she was so out of it!!!!! I have never known anyone to take more than 1mg at a time. Who is her Dr, I am going to start seeing him (g). Well, that explains ALOT. No wonder she was snoring. After all that I am surprised she is awake today. I have never…. Next time u may need to take care of the med situation ;) .
So uh, what was she suppose to do with the other xanax? Take one before, and the other one was to give you, hahahahaha…. Thanks for the update btw. Having me arrested is okay, just don’t sue me (roflmao). Tell her hello and a warm hug….

  12. Dianna says:

CONGRATULATIONS grandma’s on baby bean sprout!! :)

Kathie this comment “she does not remember demanding chocolate chip pancakes and then wearing them” made me crack up hysterically, sorry Ann. ;~) Hope your feeling better!!

  13. pam says:

okay, i see it now. Of course the doctor TOLD Ann, while he was talking to her how to take the meds. I would imagine it was take ONE and if, an hour later, you are still bouncing off walls, take the other. If you don’t need it for the test you should save it up for a special occasion, for instance as an excuse to humiliate Kathie at the Shoney’s breakfast bar. I really DO want to hear more about wearing chocolate chip pancakes, though.

so is there video of little Sprout yet? Especially maybe of Sprout and Butter Bean?

  14. Ann says:

This is Ann…..and I am sooooooooo glad y’all are having such a fine time at my expense….LOL. No really, I am sure it was totally hilarious if I could remember most of it.
    This is what I remember:

“Ms. Paige, Ms. Paige, you need to stop snoring. The MRI doesn’t work well when you are nodding back and forth and snoring.”

“I WANT SHONEY’S BREAKFAST BAR!! I DON’T CARE IF IT ALMOST NOON, I WANT SHONEY’S BREAKFAST BAR!!”

“Don’t take away my chocolate chip pancakes. I want them. Leave them alone. Don’t touch my pancakes!”

Then, crawling on my hands and knees up the stairs to the bedroom. “No, I don’t want pajamas. Naked. No clothes. Naked I say.”

  15. Norma says:

Congrads Grandmas. How does it feel to bring a new life into the world. Now you have to find out the sex of Sprout. I would have never pictured Kathie a farmer. You go girl. What is next on your list for new farming stuff?

  16. admin says:

Hmmmm I need to empty my rain barrel. I did not need to water anything this summer, so the water is probably nasty.

No more animals. I think I just might relax this winter.
