Sunday, Part Three…Bonus Blog

Butter Bean has become a woman…..

Note added: Only one of these eggs was laid by Butter Bean.  I must give credit  for the other to Lil Bean.

One of these is her first egg. We are so proud of her.

since these types of chickens are not eaten, how about the eggs? I know I know, I am ignorant about these chickens and their eggs. So I guess no chick will come from these eggs, since she is not sitting on them? Dang, that are huge eggs huh…

I collect the eggs each day. And yes, we eat them. I let Big Bean have one to hatch because she wanted to so badly. How did I know? She would not get off the nest. Usually they lay the egg and go off to play. She sat day after day, so one day I left one. I put a big X in magic marker, so I would know which one not to take. I would have to wear a glove to collect the eggs because she would peck at me when I put my hand under her. It took just three weeks for her to hatch the beautiful Little Sprout.

Actually, the eggs are very little. When I bake with them, I use double. Oddly, they are mostly yolk and very little white. Right now we are getting two eggs every other day. Hope that helps.

okay, do u have like a website u can send me to, so you will not be annoyed by my questions at some point. Now how about this, the eggs, do they taste like white chicken eggs… No I am not racist …
so the chickens also decide if they want to hatch out a baby right… interesting. so, if the chicken does not get up off the egg, u obviously know she wants to have a chick right. And if she is not allowed to have that chick, wonder if she goes through a type of grief or something. I know I know, I am getting deep here…

Maybe my neighbor, Maria, will read this and add some info. I always email her with questions on the chickens. Broody is the word used for how chickens get when they want to hatch an egg. They sit and sit and sit. You can break them of it, if you only wanted eggs, but I think if they want to set, let them set. It is not all the time, but with Silkies I think it might be often.

Fresh eggs taste totally different. They are so good, and the color of the yolk is vibrant. The Silkie eggs taste just like all other eggs, just fresh.

The shelf life of an egg in the store is over ninety days. We are eating eggs a day or a week old. We take them each day, and we put them in the frig.

Ask away. If I do not know the answer, I will tell you or I will email Maria.
