CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS

Our Christmas traditions included cleaning the house until it was spotless, lol, decorating the tree with Christmas music playing and my Dad always singing along to them and I used to love the way he sang.  We used to make homemade Christmas cookies and fudge and tasting them of course was my favorite part. LOL.

Then we would have company over Christmas Eve after our church service and then I would make my mom’s homemade eggnog, which by the way had three different kinds of liquor in it. Boy is it good!

Then the BEST part of all was opening our presents.  I was the youngest, yes, I’m the baby so I would usually get to open my presents first.  As we all got older we would all take turns opening up one gift at a time.

After the food was eaten and the presents were opened and the guests had left, it was then time to go to bed because Santa was on his way to fill up our stockings which were placed in front of our fireplace, since we were usually good, hahaha, The stocking were filled with neat things such as new socks, maybe some stationery and my mom always gave us a new ornament that represented something in our lives for that year that we could hang on the tree.

One year I was about four and my brother was 11 he filled my stocking with coal thinking it was funny and I remember him saying you must have been bad this year because you got coal in your stocking. I burst out into tears so my mom came to my rescue and said no dear he is just teasing you, stop the tears, here is your real stocking.  Well, took me a few hours, maybe days maybe  even weeks, hell maybe that’s why I’m in therapy, HAHAHAHHAAHA to get over it. LOL  Seriously though, it was a funny prank and if I was older I would have done the same to my younger sibling/s.

What I do miss about Christmas is Kathie coming over to get her presents and her stocking which my mom would fill.  One year she was going home to Michigan from NJ and she forgot to give my mom her stocking so she mailed it from Newark Airport so it would get there in time.  We still joke about that today.

When Kathie lived in Hoboken we had many a good time with her and many laughs with her.  I know I’m off my Christmas topic here but I just want all of you to know how very blessed I feel this Christmas season to have had a chance to meet Kathie and Ann too and I can’t wait to visit Possum Manor again!!

I also thank God for the friends I have met through Kathie’s blog; I truly feel blessed by your friendships.

May you all have a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New year!!

p.s. Let’s keep blogging this month, lol ;-)

Share your holiday traditions. Please.  (We could do a blog with each of our traditions.)

  1. What I remember about Christmas at Dianna’s is each kid got a section of the couch for their gifts. There were piles upon piles of gifts. I was welcomed into that family, and I think I got part of the couch too. Oh, I had the egg nog once too. Oh my it was good…potent too.

  2. What a wonderful sweet story. Except for the coal part, yet very creative of your brother to think of that… Once my brother put fire crackers in our fire place. My mom started a fire in it, to clean out the chimney, and those fire crackers started going off, bam boom bam boom. She took off running yelling, “someone is shooting a gun”. Omg I am cracking up here thinking about it. The poor woman had a very serious heart problem, she survived the fire crackers though. I don’t recall Santa coming down the chimney that year.
You mean you only had ONE eggnog, now thats polite!
Wait… Dianna, you said, first you all went to church, and then go home and get drunk? I love that part….

  3. Great job, Dianna! I think traditions are wonderful. And I think it’s very cool to have such awesome memories.

  5. Wow Donna! ( This is my cousin Donna, who is the only cousin we have on my dad’s side of the family.) Diane and I were just talking about you yesterday. Wondered where you were. You were going to stop here last spring on your way home. Diane was looking at that tape I made of the old movies, and she was shocked when she realized that Grandma and Grandpa Schmidt were younger in those films than we are now. They look so old!!

Cannot wait to catch up again. I will email you. I plan to do a Christmas memory blog by this weekend, and it will have to include your house on Christmas Eve each year.

That is definitely worth waiting for. I also look forward to reading Becky’s blog later on tonight and Ann’s blog. So, for now I will just sit back and try and be patient, lol, as much as it’s killing me, but I will try. ;-)
