Will this coop ever be finished????

How naive was I?  I thought I would put this coop up over a weekend, maybe two. Oh no…I think it is a month now. My wonderful neighbor Steve came over on Saturday and made the door. I learned a lot from what he did, and today I worked on the supports and paneled the side.  it does not seem like much, but I am exhausted and every muscle in my body is sore and tired. I soaked in the hot  tub for a while, and I am actually looking forward to bed…early.

By the way, it was over 70 today and sunny. Our flowers are still blooming.

On to the coop. I need to remind you that it is not as lopsided as it looks.  It is on a hill. We are going to have to trench two of the sides to get it level enough that monsters will not be able to crawl under the beams.

The new door

This is the side that will have the enclosure on it. The enclosure will be fourteen inches off the ground, and under it will be the food and water. Inside the enclosure will be the nesting box and an indoor perch.

Sprout is becoming quite a character.  She flutters around and gets right into the food when it is delivered. She had yogurt all over her face today, just like the big ones.

You know it actually looks straighter than in the last set of pictures, and it has a kind of cool balance. Actually looks very well done. And Sprout is very cute…although this picture looks like her name should be Bigfoot.

You know, seeing you go through this coop building thing i am beginning to understand why it took so long to get the last one built.

It takes a while to make luxury accommodations for the wee chickadees and I think you’ve done a marvelous job building the new coop! Seeing it makes me want some chickens of my own. lol

I forgot to mention that we turned the coop 180 degrees. So the left side in the pictures last week is now the right side, and vice versa. That should tell you how even it actually is, and that it is the ground. We had first thought the door should be on the right, but then we figured if we put the enclosed area on the right, it would be more protected from the elements. So, we turned it, which was not an easy thing.

I think we have spent more on screws than on lumber. They are expensive, and I think you could now land a plane on it.

I have Wednesday off for Veterans’ Day, so I will actually be able to do the screening then. I think everything else I need to do is done.

And Sprout/Bigfoot is really growing. I am just glad she will be a decent size before winter actually hits.

You do know that the reason I am in a hurry with this coop is that I traditionally put up the Christmas decorations Thanksgiving weekend. We do not get our tree that early, but I do begin the porch and roof line decorations, which do take a while. I have added the coop to my list. I just have to find the right Santa for the top of their coop. One that will not scare the hell out of them.

SNOOPY! They want Snoopy guarding their coop! And little Woodstock!

I need to look. That would be soooo cute.

    And I like this one,

but I think they are going to have to wait until next year for the extras. They get a new house and lights this year. Maybe I could get them a nice tree.

Can u catch Spout and see if she will let you kiss her on her cheek? Do chickens have cheeks, I dunno. I want to know how affectionate they are incase I want some chickens, one day….
My tree, if the tree does not come ready made, out of a box with lights already attached, there will be no tree…

I don’t think chickens have the capacity to feel affection. They know I mean food, and when I open the door they come right to me, except Sprout. She stays a good distance from the opening. I can pet them, but I have not tried to pick them up. When they are in the new coop, I will be able to be among them. This one does not allow me to; it is just too low. Silkies are very docile though, and I will be able to pick them up. They get very tame.

I love the way the house looks when it is decorated for Christmas. We have too much, and I gave a lot away last season. I will probably do that this year too. I just put a notice in recycle.com and boom it is gone. We have enough ornaments to decorate four trees, but have done only red and white the last few years. Most important is the porch. Lights on the gutters, around the posts, and over the rails. Big decision….multicolored or just red and green. I think the chickens will get multi. So many decisions.

santa will not find it difficult to find your home! also, so, once the new coup is finished, and u can enter in and out, can we start calling you the woman raised by silkies and get all the money for interviews… no one will realize its a coax if you just chirp incase the big O’s people show up to interview you.

Chicken coop is looking good! Love the picture of Sprout and the blooming flowers and how cute would Snoopy and woodstock look on top of the coop for Christmas, love the idea.

    ha…the airplane is awesome…
isn’t it amazing how willing we all are to decorate Kathie’s coop? I guess it’s too bad that i, at least, am not willing to pay for the decorations. If only i were a nobler, more giving person…or i win the lottery…

Have you ever heard how loud those blow up things are? It would scare those poor chickens so badly they would never lay again.

Poor things are under a tarp. We are getting the edge of that hurricane, and it is suppose to be pouring rain until Friday.

I am smiling with all of you decorating the coop that might be done sometime.

    How is Ann feeling?

  14. admin says:

Ann is feeling better but is not back to work. Her doctor wants to do more tests to find out what it is.
