But the snow is coming. I will never finish this thing. You have to understand the mountains. When there is even a half inch of snow, the mountain roads get dangerous. Schools close, and people run to the store to buy all the milk, bread and toilet paper their car will hold. One such event is heading our way. I don’t even know if it is safe for Ann to come home tonight.
… WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH SATURDAY AFTERNOON…
A WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH SATURDAY AFTERNOON.
SNOW WILL SPREAD INTO THE SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL MOUNTAINS OF NORTH CAROLINA FRIDAY MORNING. ALTHOUGH SLEET AND RAIN MAY MIX IN AT TIMES… THE PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED TO FALL MAINLY AS SNOW THROUGH MUCH OF THE AFTERNOON. SNOW WILL CONTINUE FOR MUCH OF FRIDAY NIGHT BEFORE GRADUALLY TAPERING OFF EARLY SATURDAY.
STORM TOTAL SNOWFALL IS EXPECTED TO RANGE FROM 4 TO 6 INCHES IN THE ASHEVILLE AND HENDERSONVILLE AREAS… ALTHOUGH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS OF UP TO 10 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE EAST OF INTERSTATE 26 ALONG THE BLUE RIDGE.
(I would like to add that I did not know, until today, that I could change the font color!)
I am going to go to Home Depot on the way home and get a bail of straw for the chickens. I was holding off, but they need to be warm this weekend. I am going to stop for yeast and flour too. Maybe this will be the weekend I finally perfect my bread.
it is 75 degrees here. Y’all are welcome to pack up the chickens and run for the good weather. It’s not like they haven’t been in the car before and stuff…
When i was in high school my parents lived on top of a hill…no matter what way we’d come home the last half mile was a really steep hill…and it was fairly common in the winter for us to park in front of a neighbor’s barn and walk the last half mile rather than try those hills…so i remember…i also remember bags of barn calcite in the trunk (it’s grittier than sand), spinning all over the roads, sliding into ditches…i remember my freshman year in college where it snowed so much one night that we had to jump out first floor dorm windows to shovel the doors clear so we could get them open.
the key word in ALL of that is remember…i wouldn’t do any of it again for anything. It’s beautiful here…c’mon down.
I think it would depend on what time Ann gets off work tomorrow night and what time she has to be back at work. If she has to be in to work on Saturday morning, it may be safer for her to stay at PMW Friday night and come home after work Sat. afternoon/evening.
I want snow but I never believe the weather forecasts…they always promise and never deliver. LMAO!! On the plus side, if it snows I have plenty of my Christmas baking to keep me occupied! YAY
For keeping the chickens warm: Could you drape a large blanket over the coop and then cover it with the tarp…tie is all down to prevent the wind from blowing it off? With the blanket and tarp over the coop and fresh straw inside it would keep them toasty…or close to it.
Good Luck on your bread!!
Why is the spacing so off on that page? Lots of nothing space too. Hmmmm
Ann and I are going to meet mid way, and I am going to give her the four wheel drive. She is not coming home, just incase the snow hits earlier than six. We are going to have dinner at Huddle House, which is like Waffle House, but the floor is cleaner.
I do put a tarp over the chickens, and I am stoping for some fresh straw. They will be toasty, but would be even more toasty if they were in the new coop.
If it snows, I am baking too. I am thinking of two kinds bread, cinnamon rolls and more peanut butter balls. Or I will lie around and read. Or I will have cabin fever by noon.
One thing for sure. If it snows…there will be photos and video.
I Love Huddle House and you are right, the floors are cleaner!
Now, I want it to snow so we will have pics and video! LMAO!
The forecast has gotten even worse. Then when I met Ann and we exchanged cars, she mentioned I might prepare the emergency box in case the power went out. IN CASE THE POWER WENT OUT!!! Oh crap. I had not put that in my baking equation. That would mean thirteen hours of darkness. Crap crap crap.
So, I have:
**Filled the bathtub with water so that I can flush the toilet. (Well is electric)
**Filled two gallon jugs with fresh water.
**Filled a soup pot with water.
**Gave the dogs fresh water.
**Filled the chicken waterer.
**Covered the chickens and used rope to keep the tarp in place.
**Threw fresh straw in the coop for the chickens to arrange when they get up in the morning.
**Put the lantern to charge
**Got out the crank radio
**Arranged the flash lights
**Plugged up the princess phone
Oh I hope I do not need any of it.
Can you experiment with baking or cooking on the wood stove. THAT sounds like fun! LMAO
I hope your power doesn’t go out. What is the likely hood of power outage up there?
six inches of snow on tree branches that have died since last year, people driving onto power poles…plenty of reasons for power to go out in the mountains..
i really hope it doesn’t happen…but you know, having experienced post hurricane power outages (that usually last for a couple of weeks) i can give you awesome power outage tips…
we have three “portable power packs” that will run lamps, computers, TV’s or whatever for hours…i highly suggest y’all get one or two for christmas…i’ll find you a link, but they’re xantrex…bright orange things…got em from Amazon, i think…they can make a world of difference in your power outage experiences. Of course we have a full sized generator as well…but they’re loud and i don’t like getting up in the middle of the night to refill the gas tank…and unless you have longer than a couple of days without power they’re way more than you’d need. The portable units are awesome, though.

yeah, huh? i think that is the longest link i have ever pasted anywhere….
I am sitting here reading about your 6″ of snow and laughing. That is not much for Michigan. Of course, the crazy driver are usually out when it snows that much here.
Kathie – remember growing up the large amount of snow and we still had to go to school? The only thing is that we had to do was walk to the main roads to get the bus. And yes, the buses might have been running a little late.
Good luck with your weather. Hope you still have power.
WOW, that’s some list you have there, hopefully your power will NOT go out so you don’t have to worry about anything but baking bread.
I remember they never canceled school in Michigan. Here a half inch closes it. I honestly could not get down my mountain right now if I wanted to, and believe me….I WANT TO!!
