The New Chicken Habitat

After all these months, the chickens are in their new home.   Maria came down at the exact time we were going to move them.  I had an elaborate plan as to how to transfer them, but Maria and Ann convinced me that the chickens could be caught easily and carried to the new house.  I had my doubts, but they were right. Ann reached in and grabbed one, while Maria and I blocked the others from escaping.  Then I would carry the chick to the new house.  Baby Lief helped us too.

I cannot find my Flip video, so I took video with my camera. However, the cord I need to transfer them from my phone to my computer is at school. ugh. So videos will have to wait a day.Until then, here are a couple of photos. There is so much light in the coop now that there is almost a glare.

The food and water is now hung so that they cannot poop in them. Honestly, it is one of their hobbies.

That is Sprout in the center. She is as big as the smallest hens now.

They have adjusted already, and they do not have a problem with me going in there every hour on the hour.

Tonight they have all climbed into the nesting box, and rooster is sitting in the opening. Such smart chickens.

it looks great, and the chickens look very happy. If nothing else you’ve WAY increased their space…not to mention that i am sure they’re enjoying the warmer weather too.

Sprout has grown up. I feel like i have missed most of her childhood. You’re going to have to encourage them to produce another baby, maybe a “nugget” or something that we can watch grow. I em sure Butter Bean would have very pretty babies.

So Sprout can reach the water and food I take it… Sprout has grown up FAST. I agree with Pam, next baby we need more pictures of growth. So uh, I am wondering, if maybe you really need to build a bigger one, it still appears a bit crowded to me. Btw, the chickens are beautiful. And when will u start on a larger coup and box to nest in? ROFL
Just kidding, no kicking allowed. I love the coup and the chickens and the pictures.

Actually, the “yard” area is twice the size as the old one. And we have already had a discussion on making a nesting box in the back, outside of the actual coop. Summer. Right now we are looking forward to getting all the lumber scraps, tools, and saw horses out of the front yard and off the porch.

If there is a second baby, it will be so much easier to take photos of it. At the other house the rooster is a buff, like Butter Bean. One of the hens just hatched a buff baby, and I hear she is really cute. Winter is a hard time for babies, so I am hoping they will wait until spring. I think we have room for one more, but after that I will take all the eggs up.

It looks really good and very bright. I am glad the chickens enjoy living in it as much as I enjoyed reading and watching the building process!! :-)

erm, Kathie? It takes an egg how long to form? When that egg was started they chickens had no idea they were moving, and once it was formed, well, they have to come out, right? So i am just not sure how rational it is to think the egg is a statement of thanksgiving for the new habitat. That said, i am equally sure they love the new habitat…just couldn’t resist a change to annoy you.

Truth be known, she was in the process of laying when I moved her. But we got another egg this afternoon. So there! lol

so having taken part (this was years ago and before i personally knew any chickens on a personal level) in the preparation of chickens for food…that is in their preparation to BE food…i know that each hen generally contains several eggs in various staged of development at any given time. It is actually very interesting to see them as they develop…small soft shelled things, almost like a balloon at first, and so on. As i understand it they final “hardening” of the shell only happens after the egg is actually laid. In any event, i know that the formation of eggs is more than a one day process. You are not fooling me with this one.
