Lil Sprout is a rooster. Ann heard his feeble attempt to crow this morning. Poodle Noodle crowed, and Lil Sprout tried to follow. Now this could be a problem, but so far it is not. Two roosters often do not get along, but since they are Silkies and Poodle Noodle is the dad, maybe they will.
Keep your fingers crossed that the soon to be hatched one is a girl. Her name is going to be Lucille, as she is scheduled to be born around the time of my mom’s birthday. If you knew my mom, you would know that she would think it was funny. Hopefully the hen is not sitting on a unfertilized egg.
A little man. How nice. What will you have to do if they do get along? Hope you won’t have to get rid of Lil Sprout. After all, he is your first grandchild.
I meant to say, what will you have to do if they don’t get along?
They can put Lil Sprout out to stud!
If they do not get along, we will have to find Lil Sprout a new home. However, they are fine now, so I have hope we can keep them all.
I feel sorry for the hens. There are only three of them.
i do not think you can convince me that animals recognize family relationships. It’s also really weird sounding that a chicken can get as big as Sprout before you can determine gender, though, so what do i know? Of course my alternative solution to the possible gender clash is that you start building yet another coop. You are now an experienced coop builder and can get around some of the obstacles you encountered last time. Or use the smaller one. Get Sprout his own girls. I mean, you know, it must take half a dozen of their little eggs to make a decent omelet for two.
You’re already going out to feed chickens regularly. Does it matter if there are like six or twelve? One pen or several? I mean, you know, for the sake of keeping families together and all, you could do it.
We kind of determined with poodles that after you have two then more kind of don’t make all that much difference- well, until you try to walk through the house unimpeded. And while I actually have a friend who has chickens that sort of free range in her yard- and occasionally wander through the pet door into the house- well, you don’t generally let yours come inside. So, like the impediment thing is sort of a non issue and stuff.
That was my best pitch for the ultimate salvation of Little Sprout. We have known and loved him since he was a shell. Give him his own girls and let him stay on the mountain he has come to love and call home.
I think it’s kind of neat that Lil Sprout tried to crow but I definitely will keep my fingers crossed that he and his dad will get along and crossing toes
that the new egg is a girl.
I went out and looked at him this afternoon. I had noticed that he had developed quite a set of tail feathers, iridescent like the rooster, but he does not have a comb yet. He had a lump, but they all do. Now, I do not know if roosters have male parts between their little rooster legs, and I am not looking. That is quite foreign territory, if you know what I mean.
Pam, I agree. If there is a problem, which I hope there will not be, we could put an addition on. Poodle Noodle is very docile, and maybe he will not mind another male. Lil Sprout is our first child, and yes we have known him since he was a shell. He will stay at Possum Manor. We cannot let them free range because of what is living in the woods. They will get eaten.
I will take pictures tomorrow. I hope to get him a voice coach soon, as I do not want his self esteem to be injured with his croaky little crow.
Where has Gena been?
Too bad Olivia went back home, she could have been his voice coach.
Gena dropped her computer on it’s not so pointy little head. It did not survive the fall. Apparently she was quite attached to it and is having difficulty adjusting to the idea of a replacement. I guess on some level it is like dealing with the idea of trading Sprout for a girl. Or something. I know i tend to resist change and especially upgrades. So I kind of get it that she is hesitant to get a new one.
actually in terms of upgrades and stuff, let me just say…i went to dinner with a group of people this evening and came out of the restroom muttering about how i hate technology. One of the folks i was with said ” you just trouble with the motion detector paper towel holder, didn’t you?”
personally i do not think technological advances are necessarily improvements. When they force me to dry my freaking hands on my pants i am sure they are not.
Okay, Gena asked me to tell y’all that she is more a Luddite than i am. Of course she did not use that word, and i’ll bet it’ll take Becky to explain it. Anyway she says she was so NOT attached to her computer, and she’ll replace it right after she gets her Maltese dentures. Apparently that is not cheap. She also said a bunch more stuff- but i forgot what it was.
Luddite: any opponent of technological progress
She is not really getting her dog dentures, is she? I guess I should give her a call. I like her voice.
haha, no, not dentures, however her dog does need doggie dentistry, I guess. I can tell you from personal experience that the little ones seem to really need much more expensive dental treatments than the big ones. When i asked the vet why it was so damn expensive to get a couple of my five pound poodle’s teeth pulled he gave me this very amused look and said “YOU try getting a pair of pliers in that mouth.”
oh, yeah, and by the way…i never doubted you knew what a Luddite WAS…i just wanted the full scale Becky explanation of the history of the term and stuff, you know?
Well, to be honest, I had to look Luddite up. I just thought I would look smart. lol
My cat needs her teeth cleaned. Expensive for sure. But I think the blood transfusion I would need after brushing her teeth would cost more.
I will give Gena a call; I miss her.
How old is Lit Sprout now?
He was born at the end of October. Well, I noticed him at the end of October. I thought the eggs hatched in thirty days, but it is showert.
Which means, the new egg could hatch by the end of this week. Oh I had better hurry with that nursery.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATHIE, hope you enjoyed your day!!
Happy Birthday Kathie! Does it feel any different? Maybe Lucille will be born on your birthday?
Okie Dokie….Here ya go Pam!! (heehee)
“The Luddites were a social movement of British textile artisans in the nineteenth century who protested—often by destroying mechanized looms—against the changes produced by the Industrial Revolution, which they felt were leaving them without work and changing their entire way of life.
The Luddite movement, which began in 1811 and 1812 when mills and pieces of factory machinery were burned by handloom weavers, took its name from the fictive King Ludd. For a short time the movement was so strong that it clashed in battles with the British Army. Measures taken by the British government included a mass trial at York in 1812 that resulted in many executions and penal transportations.
The principal objection of the Luddites was against the introduction of new wide-framed automated looms that could be operated by cheap, relatively unskilled labour, resulting in the loss of jobs for many skilled textile workers.”

And Happy Birthday Kathie!!
ah, Becky, i knew i could count on you. Thanks!
Who would have known that this blog would become an educational tool!!!
I had a great birthday. Ann bought me an ergonomic key board. I had had one years ago and loved it. I guess I am not a Luddite!
i do not think being a Luddite is keyboard dependent. I have one of those microsoft split/wave/ergonomic/just have to hit a keyboard button to get here things, and we KNOW i am a Luddite. I don’t know. Maybe for me there is a point where fundamental values (technology is bad) clashes with personal comfort (split keyboards are easier) and morality just caves. Okay, so maybe i am not proud of that.
This blog has always been an educational tool. We learned all about construction. And chickens. Chicken coop construction. And any number of other things along the way. It’s one of the things i count on- y’all stimulate my mind a bit without making my brain hurt.
