Only once before, and I think it was in the fall, we got three eggs. We have three hens of laying age, so we should get three eggs a day, but sometimes we only get one. Sometimes we get none. They will be rewarded. I am making rice right now. We are having black beans and rice for dinner. They get the leftovers.
This is my favorite hen. I know I should not a favorite, but I do. She always jumps up on the perch when I go into the coop. I feed her from my hand before she jumps down to eat with the rest.
They baby is getting bigger and faster each day. She (oh, please let it be a she) grabs a piece of vegetable or fruit and runs around as if someone was chasing her.
Ann worked all day on the back deck. She bagged 15 large garbage bags of that foam insulation. I was shocked at what she got done. I have loaded eight bags in my car to take to the dump tomorrow. I will make a second trip with the rest later in the week. Notice the difference?

i think it is perfectly fine to have a favorite chicken.
I have a favorite dog. And they’re smarter.
overall chickens have brains smaller than chickpeas, so they are not going to realize or remember if you saved the best bit of fruit for the one who will eat it from your hand, nor will they amend their behavior to encourage you to feed them instead.
of all the Possum Manor creatures, though, i absolutely think Ann should be your favorite- after all, no chickens were involved in the cleaning of the deck. Tremendous change back there, and i am sure it wasn’t fun to clean up.
and the burning- well, that alone makes me want to like break out in song, you know? Black ants roasting in an open fire…
i grilled last weekend. As always i overdid the charcoal starter ( i am not sure you’re really supposed to use it with matchlight charcoal anyway). The neighbors did not call the fire department, but for a few minutes I think they considered it…
and yeah, i get it that i burn up a lot of charcoal needlessly and my little coals ultimately do not simmer for as long as they might otherwise…but you know, for a couple of steaks and some shrimp you just don’t need it to last all that long- and it’s SO much more fun to have twenty foot flames.
You are right, and Ann is my favorite of all the creatures. She did so much work, that I was shocked. I figured it would take days. I have eight bags of the foam insulation in my car right now and will take them to the dump on the way home.
As for fire. When you do visit Possum Manor, I am going to keep you and Ann away from matches of any kind. You two would be deadly together. We were at a cook out on July 4 one year. When they brought out the massive amount of fire works, I saw Ann’s eyes sparkle, and I saw her begin to drool. Oh no, you two are not going to play with fire together.
I am thinking of calling us Possum Manor Farmlet. How does that sound?
OMG Pam! How funny “black ants roasting in an open fire”! I lol and told it to my husband and he did too.
Ann what a great job you did. Can’t even imagine how much work it was. Your deck looks so huge now. What a big difference. Enjoy.
WOW, Ann, kudos to ya!! The deck looks great and wow that was a lot of bags, huh?!!? Now you have a place to put a hammock!
