Ann begins her stacation………and Brando’s bloody mess

What is a stacation?  It is a vacation where you stay at home.  We are going to do things around here.  Today we just putzed around, and I started another good book. For dinner we grilled hot dogs (mine were turkey), and we included homemade potato salad ( I made pretty darn good potato salad) and Stella beer.

Mighty good way to begin a staycation.  I also made cookies. Well, not cookies exactly, but more like bars.  They were suppose to be fig newtons, but I could not find figs. So, I made raisin newtons. Had to boil up the raisins and everything.  Then they are made into bars.

When they come out of the oven, you cut them into pieces.

They are ungodly sweet. I made a few of the bars with raspberry jam, and those are really good.

As I was typing this blog up, Ann yelled from the kitchen for me to see what was all over the dishwasher door and floor.  She thought it was jelly, but I realized it was blood. Brando likes to lick the dishes as we put them in the dishwasher (oh, yes it is disgusting), but these dishes were clean, and I ALWAYS put the knives downward so they cannot hurt anyone. I followed the massive amount of blood on the floor and realized it was coming from Brando. We thought it was his mouth, but his head was covered too. What I finally realized, after I was completely covered in blood, was that the tip of his ear was bleeding. Actually the tip of his ear was missing, and he was bleeding profusely from where the tip should have been.  He is not happy with me trying to clean him up, but finally the ear has stopped bleeding. I need to wash his head and neck off now, but he does not want to come near me. I guess we will take him to the vet tomorrow, but  we do have antibiotic cream we could put on in the meantime.  I gave him ice cream as a reward for being such a good dog and only smearing blood on the front door and bedroom wall.  Ann laughed at me and said I was the best mother and the worst at the same time. That was because I let him back in the house while he was still bleeding because I did not want to hurt his feelings.  I got this picture while he and Xena were eating their ice cream.  We still have no idea how he did it. Ann actually searched the dishwasher for the piece of ear. Needless to say, we rewashed those dishes.

Antibiotic cream?  Leave it alone?  What do you all suggest?  Right now he is laying on the floor, on the ear, so it must not hurt him too much.

OMG…..poor Brando, sounds like you did the right thing to me. Is their a 24 hour vets office near you so you don’t have to wait until tomorrow. If there is I would go tonight, if not do what your plans are and go right away tomorrow.

P.S. Those raisin and raspberry bars look DELICIOUS and my father used to let the dog do the same thing clean them off before the dishwasher did. LOL

  2. Dianna says:

Forgot to ask, what does Ann think you should do about Brando?

  3. Kathie says:

I honestly do not think it is bad enough for the 24 hour emergency vet. It is so very expensive. Ann thinks we should wait until tomorrow and see how he is. If it scabs over, I am thinking he will be fine. I will report in the morning.

  4. Dianna says:

Your right I forgot how expensive the 24 hour vets are, UGH, I’m sure he’ll be fine then if both of you agree and your also right about the scabbing over part too, if that happens you probably won’t even have to take him anywhere.

My dog Chip bit a part of Calie’s ear once. I took her to the vet and all they did was clean the ear. They told me to keep it clean and watch her so she did not cause it to start bleeding again. It only bled a little bit more. So I would washed it with cold water and toweling. It was alright in a day or so. After it heals, the only thing you will see it the missing part of the ear. Today the fur on the ear has grown over the area there he bit her. Yes, the ear is a different shape. It never bothered her except when it was first done.

Why he bit her, I don’t really know. I think they were fighting over something at the time. And yes, I had blood everywhere because she was shaking her head all the time when this happened.

Brando’s ear looks better this morning. It has crusted over, and we are going to leave it alone. We will look at it a lot, and if it looks likes it is getting infected or anything, we will take him to the vet. If the police had walked in during or after the event, they would have thought there had been a homicide. There was so much blood. We even found it on another wall last night. He kept shaking his head, which would send the blood everywhere. He has a lot of blood on his neck, but we are going to give him a few days before we traumatize him more and wash it up.

Donna just renamed Brando, and we are going to continue with it.

    Brando Van Gogh

it looks like someone bit him. Now, while I would never accuse you or Ann, it almost has to be a bite. Since they do not have opposable thumbs and stuff it is nearly impossible for dogs to slice their own ears off even if someone put a knife in the dishwasher upside down. It’s easy enough for them to cut them, that happens all the time, but damn difficult to cut them OFF. The only thing a vet could do that you cannot at home is run a line of stitches along the cut, and give you prophylactic antibiotics. If you can keep it closed up he’ll probably be fine without the stitches, and if you are much like the rest of us you have some of the antibiotics he didn’t finish last time he needed them. Neosporin is fine. You probably do not want to try to put a bandaid on it, cause that’ll make him shake his head more…

Greta the wonder dog had emergency ear surgery last week- you should see that mess-she scratched her ear, broke one of the lil blood vessels in it, and it filled up like a damn water balloon. So now our dogs can have deformed ears together, i guess.

Love the new name for Brando Van Gogh! I bet you will find that piece of dried up bloody ear around the house somewhere. My money is on that he put his head somewhere he shouldn’t have and got it stuck. Can’t imagine any of your animals biting off his ear. Although I have been known to bite off someone’s head now and then.

Your pastries look like mandel bread! I make them the same way but mix the stuff thru them. Once the loaves cool down I slice them. Nuts and chocolate chips are favorites. Plus much tastier than squash casserole.

  10. Kathie says:

Gotta love a dog with a deformed ear. I honestly do not know if he was bitten or got the ear caught in something. Xena did bite him once. He had a puncture wound that the vet said was two canine teeth. At the time RD had had his canines removed, so it had to be Xena.

However, he seems better today. The ear has scabbed over, and he seems unaffected. We keep finding new places he splattered though.

  11. Norma says:

If you feel the need to put a bandaid on it, then use the clear liquid kind. I think it is called liquid bandaid. It stays there until it wears off. I used it on my cat when she would scratch her ears. It helped stopped the bleeding and prevent it from starting up again. You can find it in the drug store where they sell bandaids.

I think Brando will be fine now that it has stopped bleeding. Poor thing. I know the next day, my dog acted like it never happened. I remember the blood going all over the place because mine shook her head for a long time after it happened. Check the furniture because mine wanted to rub the ear on the couch.

By the way, the ear does not grow back. Mine still has her’s from about 5 years ago.

  12. pam says:

Norma, you amaze me. I am going out to buy liquid bandaid for my doggie first aid kit. They really seem to hate bandages, and I never would have thought of that.

  13. Kathie says:

Ok, one warning about that spray band aid…. Once I got a cat scratch on the lid of my eye. Ann sprayed that stuff on me, and I do not know that she really did not poke me with a hot rod. Oh my god it was painful.

Norma, didn’t it bother the dog?

  14. Norma says:

I got the type the goes on with a brush. The brush is in the bottle. The only problem I had was getting it all over the cut. It did not seem to hurt them once it was on. And it did help the healing process too. One of you might have to hold Brando while the other one puts the liquid bandaid on the ear. You only have to do it once and you are all set until it heals.

  15. pam says:

yeah, i think it was probably aerosol propellants or the extra alcohol they put in stuff to help pump sprayers work that lit up your life.

so, two days into the “staycation”, how’s it going? And how is poor Brando doing?

  16. Kathie says:

The stacation is going well. Today we took a day trip to the local Home Depot. We bought quarter round molding for the front door, but it was too big for the side with the hinges. Back tomorrow for the smaller side.

Brando has forgotten about his trauma. It looks to be healing, and I am not going to do anything but keep an eye on it. We are working at getting the blood out of the non-painted wood trim.

Never a dull moment at Possum Manor.

  17. pam says:

alcohol is the best thing for cleaning unfinished wood-
and if you have the stronger stuff- i am not sure, i think it might actually be called wood alcohol- anyway Home Depot sells it in the paint department- is the best. Alternatively you can try peroxide..which actually may bubble it out. In no case, though, should you let anything wet sit there for long- if it isn’t actively taking it out letting the wood get too wet will let the blood stain work in deeper. If you’re planning to paint the trim anyway then cleaning it with alcohol- even if it’s discolored- shouldn’t make a difference. And if it does bleed through Kilz or a layer or two of varnish before painting it over will work.

  18. Norma says:

Try a wood cleaner and a fine steel wool pad. I used that on my furniture from my Grandparents and it cleaned it very well. You must use the fine steel wool pad with no soap in it. Don’t use a course steel wool pad because it will stratch the wood. Murphy’s oil soap works well, too. But if you want to paint it, then don’t use the oil soap. Oil soap is OK if you plan to stain it.

You can always ask the people at Home Depot what they would recommend.
