First…pssst Pam…Are you on vacation? You OK? Not like you to not answer email.
My friend Sal is here from New Jersey. He usually cooks, but this year I am just letting him vacation. We have been constantly running, because he cannot sit still. Today we are going to the gym and then I do not know what. Tomorrow we are going to my school, and then running around. Tuesday we are going swimming at a water fall. Wednesday he flies home but another friend from Michigan and her partner are coming to spend the afternoon and have an early dinner. (When Ann works, most everything is early since she has to be in bed by eight.) Thursday I will be in black, veil over my head, tears falling from my eyes. School. I go back to school.
We always laugh about this commercial, and I am assuming that it was released nationwide. The voice behind the pothole is from Asheville. Makes us laugh every time.
I am sure I will have photos from the waterfall/swimming hole. I should take a video of the dogs eating corn on the cob. They love it! When I figure how many ears I need to get for dinner, I have to figure in one for each of them.
OHHHHHHHH I got a Nook. It is the Barnes and Nobles version of the Kindle, but offered me more in the way of downloading books in different files.
Anyone…like Becky the finder of information…what it means that the acorns are falling already. It is really early, but they are falling so furiously that it sounds as if people are walking on the roof. Honestly.
Have a great day all. Zanesville identify yourself and say hi.
Acorns are falling in Michigan too. My daughter has a lot out in South Lyon and the squirrels love them.
Be careful with the corn on the cob. Don’t let the dogs eat the cob part. It can cause problems in their stomachs, which may create vet bills for you. The cob can do that same damage as beef bones can – tear their stomachs up, which can cause a lot of bleeding around the stomach and outword.
Can wait to see the waterfall pictures. Have fun.
From what I gather Oak trees do not produce acorns every year. They will produce a bumper crop every 2-7 years with a small crop the year after. As for any wives tales about them falling from the trees early…some say yes it means a harsh winter and others say depends on where you are located. But:
20 signs of a harsh winter
Thicker than normal corn husks
Woodpeckers sharing a tree
Early arrival of the Snowy owl
Early departure of geese and ducks
Early migration of the Monarch butterfly
Thick hair on the nape (back) of the cow’s neck
Heavy and numerous fogs during August
Raccoons with thick tails and bright bands
Mice eating ravenously into the home
Early arrival of crickets on the hearth
Spiders spinning larger than usual webs and entering the house in great numbers
Pigs gathering sticks
Insects marching a bee line rather than meandering
Early seclusion of bees within the hive
Unusual abundance of acorns
Muskrats burrowing holes high on the river hank
“See how high the hornet’s nest, ‘twill tell how high the snow will rest”
Narrow orange band in the middle of the Woolly bear caterpillar warns of heavy snow; fat and fuzzy caterpillars presage bitter cold
The squirrel gathers nuts early to fortify against a hard winter
Frequent halos or rings around sun or moon forecast numerous snow falls.
Kathie- i didn’t get email to answer.
I am alive and not on vacation.
I am actually planning a vacation this year-
we’re planning on going to Seaworld in the fall.
i have always wanted to see Shamu-
although since he ate the trainer i do not think he is doing shows now.
anyway- that all depends on the yearly hurricane schedule,
but it’s not till october anyway.
so i am here. Maybe you could resent the email?
Norma, they leave the cob. Brando does chew it, but does not eat it. They love the corn.
Becky, We had a huge acorn cover last year, and this year it is happening again. If we end up with the same winter, I am moving to someplace with less snow, like Montana or Alaska.
Pam, If I was Shamu, I would have eaten my trainer a long time ago. How far is Sea World from you? I resent the email. I had sent it to your old email. duh
Kathie, don’t hate me…but…I loved this winter!! I love snow and hate heat. I must admit, after a month of snow on the ground I was getting a little sick of it but Fall and Winter are my favorite seasons!
I am with you on favorite seasons, Becky. And I would never hate you. I just was traumatized last winter being up here alone. If Ann had been here, I would have been much better. I will be more prepared this year. I hope. And I agree, I would rather be cold than hot any day.
Me too! I hate when it gets over 75 and especially when it’s humid! I love a sunny crisp (10-20 degrees) day in the winter with snow on the ground and no wind. Mmmm, heaven! But Fall is lovely too.
i moved to south florida. That alone should give you my opinion of winter. Winter is damn near perfect here. Spring and fall stay just a little too warm. but you know, years ago i had a job in a wilderness camp.In Pennsylvania. in the winter, we slept in tents.
You DO adapt. I just do not ever want to adapt again. Nor do i want to travel 20 miles a day in a covered wagon (hopping off now and then to scoop mule poop.)So did you and ANN get battery packs>
WE got a couple of new storm shutters- made of plexiglass so we can SEE the damn storms.i did NOT vote in favor of that improvement.
We never got the battery packs, but we are hoping for a mild winter.
It was really hot today. Count down to school. Two more days.
I like the cooler weather too. July and August here has been too hot and humid. With my new knees, it has been rough. The humid weather has been causing me to get stiff in the knees.
I can do more outside when the weather is cool. Like work in the flowers and shubs. Hines Park is a nice drive to and from work in the fall. I enjoy watching the animals out eating or playing. They don’t come out in the hot weather.
Love the pot hole commercial, LOL. I actually like all of the seasons for all different reasons, haha. I really like what each one of them has to offer except, summer does get too hot for me and winter does get very cold. But other than that I’m ok with them. LOL.
