Phyllis is adjusting, slowly, but she is adjusting. I cannot get any photos because she is not really out. I will try one in the house, where she is helping the other two hens SIT ON NOTHING!!!
I think Lucille laid her first egg. You usually look for an egg around six months, and she is just under that age. It is the tiniest egg, so I am thinking it is her first. It could have been Phyllis, but hens rarely lay when stressed…and she is stressed.
The egg on the right is a regular egg, the kind you buy in the store. My usual silkie egg is in the middle, and the new tiny egg is on the left.
I spent yesterday making jam and jelly. I have tried many times to make scuppernong jelly, but it never has set. Yesterday I was successful. It has a lighter, more delicate taste than regular grape jelly. I made that too, regular grape jelly. (Pam, tell Patti her batch will be made as soon as I empty a few more large jars.) I also made a batch of raspberry jam, since I had given away all of the batch I made in July.
Note the difference in color and clarity:
The grape, in the center, is clear. The scuppernong on the left is cloudier, and the raspberry is nice and seedy.
I know, I need to get these mailed to all of you. I still have Dianna’s D all wrapped up, but going to the post office is as stressful as a trip to the dentist.

WOW….you’ve been busy! No rush on the jam or jelly or my “D”, I guess I should speak for myself when I say that. Pam, yours will be the first to be mailed!!
actually we’re on the LAST jar of grape jelly (which Patti is graciously sharing with me), so no hurry.
my question here is, how come we cannot give the chickens something to sit on? I mean you know, they could sit on plastic eggs, or croquet balls or something- which would do them no good at all, but it would maybe make a great picture or two, you know?
the jam and jelly all looks really good, by the way. It always amazes me that you do it. I remember my grandmother making stuff like that, and it really seemed like a lot of work. My favorite, by the way, was elderberry, which i think really was a pain in the ass…tiny tiny berries and you had to squeeze them through cheesecloth to get rid of the seeds…
I can give the hens a golf ball to sit on, but then their want to sit would never end. Silkies are very motherly and want babies all the time. They will give up eventually.
I am not doing any jam I have to strain. I have to put the scuppernongs through a sieve, but that is all I will do.
It is a lot of work to make the jam, but it is satisfying to give it away.
The jars are so pretty. So much work!
The eggs in the row are funny. I guess that’s why some are called medium, large, extra large and your neighbor’s are jumbo. But I have never seen small. You should sell them for people who have high cholestrol but want eggs. Or dieters, lol.
ok, I have a question that has absolutely nothing to do with this blog but hopefully one of you will know, Becky, I think you do, lol. How can we get a picture to show up on our profile link when we blog?!? I would love to put a picture to my name but haven’t the foggiest idea of how to do it…..HELP!!! THANKS! Good night all
I don’t think you can. I can put them up, but you cannot because you would have to have access to my server.
ohhhhh, ok, Thanks. Would you be able to put up the picture of my mom and I when you get the chance. THANKS! : )
Sure. I have to find it first, but then I will.
while you’re working on that can we please have a Phyllis update?
THANKS again, and yes, sorry Pam we do need a Phyllis update too!!
Yes, a Phyllis update. Picture would be nice too.
I would love to get a picture of Phyllis, but I would have to lay down on my stomach in chicken poop to get it. She is now getting out of the box. They are no longer sitting on her, and she comes and goes in and out of the box, BUT when she is out, she is under the house. She is a Diva. I am sure of that. She is coming around, though.
No plans of canning this weekend. I think I just might read. I have not had much time to read since school began, so maybe I will make up for it.
Heading out to Possum Manor West on Sunday for a while.
Life is good.
ENJOY your reading and have fun at PMW!
Waiting for a update on Phyllis. Picture too. Is everything OK with the troops in the coop?
